Kyle Peterson, who as earlier reported, filed a lawsuit in federal court against the city of New York for charging him with a misdemeanor for riding his unicycle on a Brooklyn sidewalk. Has had his lawsuit dismissed by Judge Brian Cogan.
Since there has been so much attention brought to unicycling by this lawsuit the saga may not be quite over. I will keep you posted with any major news affecting unicycling within the city of New York.
Kyle Petersen’s interview on the Colbert Report aired on April 13, 2011. It features many clips that were taken at the New York Unicycle Club’s (NYUC) special meeting that was scheduled just to allow the camera crew access to a diverse variety of NYUC members.
You can check out the background on Kyle’s story and the special NYUC meeting in this earlier post.

This special meeting has been prompted by the feud between Brooklyn’s own unicyclist and juggler, Kyle Peterson and the NYPD. The feud began over Kyle being ticketed on November 10th, 2010 at 2:00am for riding his unicycle on the sidewalk. Kyle subsequently filed a three million dollar law suit against NYC and the NYPD. The people at the Colbert Report got wind of this feud and requested to come out to one of our unicycle meetings and record interviews of some unicyclists. Our regular meetings did not fit into their schedule so we will holding a special meeting to accommodate them and just have an excuse to get together and ride.
NYC is fighting the law suit and has filed a motion to dismiss the law suit. You can read the latest details of this saga in this New York Daily News article.
So on March 26, 2011 come out be filmed and or interviewed for a future Colbert Report episode.
With over 1000 photographs that were taken at regular New York Unicycle Club meetings it was quite difficult to choose just 150 to be included in the Best of 2010 album. It was even more difficult was to choose just a single photograph to represent the entire year’s worth of images.
.
Ironically with all that great unicycling images that I was able to capture throughout 2010, I chose this photo of Tysen practicing his stand up wheel walking skills at one of the December 2010 meetings.
Though it could be argued that I should have included them, I decided to excluded the 247 photographs that were taken at this year’s Unicycle Festival. Many of those images were captured at our first Sunday of September meeting that was made a part of this past year’s festival.
I attempted to include a variety of club of members who have attended meetings throughout the year. Amongst the photographs are many of the club members who have just learned to ride unicycle during 2010 by attending club meetings. Check out and enjoy the Best of 2010 slideshow and decide which ones are your favorites. I encourage you to come out to our 2011 club meetings and get an image of yourself captured on our Flickr site.
NYUC is calling for all members and regular visitors to join the Unicycling Society of America (USA). For insurance purposes having to do with our new permit for meeting at Grant’s Tomb each month, we require for all of our regular members attending club meetings to join up with an annual membership to USA. Member benefits includes, a subscription to One Wheel Magazine, the ability to participate at the North American Unicycling Championships and Convention (NAUCC). You will receive a membership card and will have voting privileges.
An annual membership costs $20 per individual and $35 for an entire family. At meetings, those attending that do not have a current USA membership card beginning in 2011 will be asked to sign a waiver in order to unicycle in front of Grant’s Tomb.
You will have to mail in your form with payment since there is no provision for paying online. You can fill in and print out this membership form. Or you can just print out this paper form that you can fill in later. Forms will be available at all club meetings.
After a purchase glitch, the Flickr site reverted to a free account for the last few weeks. The free account unfortunately only shows a portion of the content that is held on the site. I have resolved the issues with Flickr. Now that things are back in proper order, you have full access to all of the photographs taken for the last couple of years including the photographs from the last two well attended meetings that took place this month. The November meeting’s photograph are now available in this Slideshow.
Troy Wharton from Realscape Media stopped by a recent New York Unicycle Club meeting to shoot some video and conduct a few interviews of club members. The result is this nice two and a half minute video from Troy’s Youtube.com Reelscaper page. It is a brief visual description of what goes on at typical meeting of the New York Unicycle Club. The NYUC meets twice per month all year round. The first Sunday and the third Saturday of any given month are our regular meetings. On those days expect to see unicyclist riding around in front of Grants’ Tomb. Visit our Meetings page for more information and directions.
In Unison is a short documentary film detailing the sport of extreme unicycling. The film gives a historic depiction of the unicycle and highlights evolution of the sport of unicycling to show the many facets of the sport as it exists today.
The film was produced by Joseph Neigh pictured above. Joseph is a filmmaker and unicyclist from Northern Virginia. He has produced this film as part of his senior thesis while attending George Mason University. The documentary film debuted at the NYC 2010 Unicycle Festival that took place on Governors Island in September. Some of the clips within the film were filmed at NYUC meetings.
This (above) is the 38 second trailer for the film. If you are ready for more, you can watch the entire 21 minute film on The Internet Movie Database website, IMDb.com, Just follow this link for the full version of In Unison.
The 2010 New York City Unicycle Festival the first unicycle festival to take place in the north east was a huge success. Our NYUC first Sunday of the month meeting played a huge part. We had more than 100 unicyclist come to the meeting in front of Grant’s Tomb. Featured from two days of the three day festival we have on our Flickr site an Unicycle festival album with more than 240 images taken at the main festival that took place on Saturday on Governors Island and at the NY unicycle club meeting on Sunday. If you have the time take a look at the slide show of all of the photographs of unicyclist that came from all over the country to visit with us in support of sport of unicycling.
We were quite please to have had the opportunity to participate with so many other unicyclist in this event. We look forward to next years event that should be even better.
