2017 Photographs of the Year

Saturday, January 6th, 2018
[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="318" caption="Best Photos of 2017"][/caption]

This past year represents the tenth consecutive year of me snapping photographs at unicycle meetings and at unicycle events and posting the photo to our Flickr site. If you visit our Flickr site and navigate to one of our earliest albums you will see photographs recorded on a old Nokia phone. That phone was able to record 2 mega pixel images at the time. With the resolution of today's displays, those photos will not look that good. Fortunately, soon after recording those photos, I purchased an actual Canon portable camera and began recording 5 mega pixel images. For the last three years I have been recording 18 mega pixel images on a newer camera. Coincidentally, for those phone images and also for the best of  photos of 2014 when I purchased my latest camera, I featured a photograph of David Bagley riding his Crab Cycle unicycle. For those of you that are not familiar with the Crab Cycle unicycle built by Tom Miller, it is set up so that as you pedal forward it will travel sideways. In the photo David is pedaling forward and traveling to his right. It is by additional coincidence that David's Crab Cycle ridden by another club member was featured a just year earlier in the best of 2016 album. You can read the article that I wrote for last year's album. For the best photos of 2017 I am again featuring David Bagley and his Crab Cycle.  At this time, although I am featuring David for much of the same reasons as I did for 2014, I have additional reasons for 2017. For the unicycle meetings that occurred in 2017, he provided much support by attending a majority of meetings from January through October. He drives over to New York from his home in New Jersey in his little subcompact Honda Fit. His car is always fully packed with unicycles and juggling equipment including the Crab Cycle in the featured photo.  A few of the cycles that David brings along with him were built by Tom Miller of the Unicycle Factory. a sample of those include the double parallel wheel unicycle,  A unicycle that that pedals backward to roll forward and a unicycle with a 43 inch wheel. David serves as the Unicycle Factory website designer and administrator. If you are not familiar with Tom Miller or his work you can check out the recently published Youtube documentary about his work. This year as in year as past, I had difficulty restricting the number of photos to a reasonable number. In 2017 my job was made a little easier since we had a lot of meetings that were cancelled or just not well attended do to poor weather.  I was able to keep the selection down to just 100 images. I hope that you enjoy them. Please take the time to look at some of the other albums on the Flickr site that these photos are selected from. You can click on the above image or the following link to go to directly to a slide show of the Best of 2017 images.

2017 Tour de Bronx

Sunday, October 29th, 2017
[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="510" caption="NYUC members with the Bronx Borough President"][/caption]

On Sunday, October 22, 2017, three club unicyclist, Rodrigo Sanz, Abdullah Wright, and myself set out from 161st and Grand Concourse for a 25 mile tour of the borough of the Bronx. First established in 1994, this event has continued to grow over the years to the point where this year there were approximately 7,000 registered cyclists.  There are a litany of sponsors for the Tour de Bronx event, some provide funding some providing fuel, swag or volunteer participation. Enthusiastically leading this all day event is the Bronx Borough President, Ruben Diaz Jr. The Borough President gives an inspirational speech to launch the each branch of the tour.  The 25  and 40 mile tour routes scenically wined their way through the Bronx on the streets, through parks and cycling paths. There are a few rest stops along the way where tour sponsors provide water, bagels and protein bars. The circular route ends to a big welcome rally at the New York Botanical Garden we  were welcomed by a live musical performance, Dominos pizza, water or energy drink and free Tour de Bronx t-shirt. It really is a fun ride that I have had the opportunity to participate in this tour for the third consecutive year. Throughout the ride we receive a lot of awesome support for the sport of unicycling from our fellow cyclists. This year we were almost excluded from riding due to a misunderstanding of unicyclists ability to ride long distances by the tour's organizers. We like to thank Olga Luz Tirado the executive director of the Bronx Tourism Council for patiently listening to the three of us collectively lobby for our inclusion by pointing out how we have been participating in supporting cycling in the Bronx by completing this event multiple times. Seeing the photo albums of previous tour events on our Flickr site, sealed the deal. In addition to the photo above, you can check out additional photos recorded at this year's event by clicking on the photo above or following this Flickr link. In addition, The photo below of our participation was included in an online article on the Riverdale Press website. My thanks to their Chief Photographer, Julius Motal for including us in the following photo that links to the Riverdale  Press article. You can enjoy more of Julius' work by checking out some of Julius' blog posts.

Best Photos of 2016

Saturday, December 31st, 2016

The year 2016 was another full year of unicycle events and meetings We did have a few meetings that did not take place due to weather conditions. Throughout the year I posted to our Flickr site 3,096 photos from meetings and other events. With so many great photos it was extremely difficult to select just a few to be considered "Best of". Last year, for 2015 I was able to select 71 photos in contrast to the year before where in 2014 I selected 163 photos. This year I started with a pool of 200 photos that I intended to reduce down to 175 or so. If you click the photo through to the 2016 photo album, you will see that I settled on 185 photos for the 2016 year. As you can imagine I found in necessary to exclude a tremendous amount of great  and interesting photos taken throughout the year.

Each year I select one unicyclist to represent the "Best of " album. This year it was pretty obvious who it should be. Elias Sanchez who, at the beginning of the year was already a talented athlete and unicyclist, worked hard at a number of balance skills throughout the year including roller bolla, slack rope and yoga. Within this year he has learned to ride two exotic unicycles built by Tom Miller of the Unicycle Factory. One unicycle that pedals backward to go forward and another (depicted) that goes sideways as you pedal in either direction. He also learn to ride the vertical two wheel unicycle.

I had a great time recording all of this photographs and attending all of the unicycle events throughout the year. I am looking forward to doing more of the same in the coming months.

The Fall after the Festival.

Tuesday, November 8th, 2016
[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="460" caption="Third Saturday, September 2016"][/caption] After another successful unicycle festival we do not put away our unicycles for the season. We still congregate for unicycle meetings and for a few riding events.  Above is one of many photos taken that day within the photo album on our Flickr site during the September unicycle meeting. For the month it was the only meting that took place at our usual meeting venue. The first Sunday meeting occurred as part of the unicycle festival. Clicking on any photo in this posting it will take you to the album of the photos recorded at that particular event. So if you have the time click though and check them out. [caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="453" caption="2016 African American Day Parade"][/caption] On September 18th, the day after the meeting, five of members of the club, John, Calvin, Jerlin, Ken and Abdullah, rode along with the Labor Union Local 79 float up Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Blvd. from 112th street up to 136th street for the 2016 African American Day Parade.  We rode our unicycles entertaining the crowd to the music being played by the disc jockey on the float. We had a wonderful weather and a good time in it. As you can see we had unicycles of different sizes and Abdullah even brought along one of his pythons that became the main attraction and attention of the crowd as we rode the parade route. The ride itself is relatively short. However, we basically spend the entire afternoon watching the parade participants and hanging out with the crowd. [caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="453" caption="2016 Tour de Bronx"][/caption] We did have a couple of meetings in October that were not as well attended as the September meeting. You can check out the October album on the Flickr site to see a bit of what went on during those meetings.  However, On the 23rd of October four of us, Ken, David, Abdullah, and Rodrigo, completed the 25 mile route of the 22nd annual Tour de Bronx. I have to give a shout out to John who started out the ride with us at Harris Park on a 29" unicycle but had to drop out along the route. The tour is a popular well attended cycling ride with thousands of cyclist participating in both the 40 mile and 25 mile routes. The tour is sponsored by Bronx Borough President's office in conjunction with many commercial sponsors. the Current Borough President, Ruben Diaz Jr. actually participates riding the 25 mile route.  As you can see in the photo above the four of us all brought along our big 36" wheels to get us safely through the route. The route took us through the streets and the various bike paths through out the Bronx making a few rest stops to fuel up on water, bagels and granola bars. The ride concluded at the Bronx Botanical Garden where there was pizza, energy drinks and a T-shirt waiting for each rider that completed the ride. As always we will continue to meet throughout the coming months. We may even get together for additional rides if we happen to be blessed with nice weather. Come out and visit at one or more of our meetings. If nothing else it will likely get you off the couch and outside to get some air.

Best of 2012 Photos

Saturday, January 26th, 2013
[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="337" caption="Best of 2012"]First of July 02[/caption] Check out some of what I have chosen to be this past year's best photographs that are in this Slideshow from our Flickr page. For this year I chose a photograph of myself. I find this choice to be ironic since I am the one who is usually behind the camera rather than out in front of it. In this photo I am riding my 36 inch unicycle on the day I received it. I had spent years flip flopping on the idea of having my very own 36 inch unicycle. For more than ten years I have been taking short rides on every 36 inch that someone brought to a meeting. I would like to thank Renie Cohen of Just One Wheel for taking this photo and allowing me to add it to our collection. The photographs that are in this slideshow are just a small portion of the photos that were taken this past year. Since I really do not always concentrate on taking photos at every meeting,  I am always amazed at how many I have taken by the end of the year. Each year it is so tough to reduce such a huge amount of photographs down to less than 150 of the best photos taken. I attempt to include the best photos of just about everyone that has attended a meeting or event throughout the year.  I also make an effort to give the viewer a sense of the breadth of events that have taken place. If you would like to see all the photos from 2012. You will find them all gathered on the 2012 collection page. You can click on each set and then click on the word "Slideshow" Throughout 2012 I have witnessed the popularity of unicycling continue to rise.  The participation at the unicycle festival this year was again tremendous. I hope this year turns out even better.

Best Photos of 2011 Is Presented.

Tuesday, February 7th, 2012
[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="295" caption="Kyle (The Brooklyn Juggler) Petersen"]August 2011 Sunday 24[/caption]

For the 2011 unicycle year I have chosen over 130 photographs taken at unicycle club meetings and other unicycling events. This year I am featuring The Brooklyn Juggler, Kyle Petersen. 2011 had been quite a year for Kyle. From his law suit against the city of New York, to appearing on the David Letterman and  Colbert Report television shows, to entertaining  us with his Unicycle Action News reports posted on Facebook and YouTube. Kyle Petersen has brought much positive attention to the sport of unicycling and to the New York Unicycle club.

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="410" caption="Ziggy Cohen"]2011 March - 0152[/caption]

I also have to highlight Ziggy Cohen, who also has had an incredible year of 2011 unicycling. At four years of age he is one of the youngest unicycle riders ever. He appeared in video that has been broadcast  locally as featured on Long Island's TV55 and also nationally including the Cobert Report and the Wendy Williams show. His mom and dad, Adam and Renie,  have recently opened the first of it's kind facility called Just One Wheel. If you were not aware, take a look at my earlier post about  the new Just One Wheel facility a business that is dedicated to the sport of balance.

Take the time to look at the slideshow of the Best of 2011 photos on our photostream.
