Top 150 NYUC Photos for 2010

Sunday, January 9th, 2011

With over 1000 photographs that were taken at regular New York  Unicycle Club meetings it was quite  difficult to choose just 150 to be included in the Best of 2010 album.  It was even more difficult was to choose just a single photograph to represent the entire year’s worth of images.

.Saturday

Ironically with all that great unicycling images that I was able to capture throughout 2010, I chose this photo of Tysen practicing his stand up wheel walking skills at one of the December 2010 meetings.

Though it could be argued that I should have included them, I decided to excluded the 247 photographs  that were taken at this year’s Unicycle Festival. Many of those images were captured at our first Sunday of September meeting that was made a part of this past year’s festival.

I attempted to include a variety of club of members who have attended meetings throughout the year. Amongst the photographs are many of the club members who have just learned to ride unicycle during 2010 by attending club meetings. Check out and enjoy the Best of 2010 slideshow and decide which ones are your favorites. I encourage you to come out to our 2011 club meetings and get an image of yourself captured on our Flickr site.

Short Clip About the Club

Tuesday, October 12th, 2010

Troy  Wharton from Realscape Media stopped by a recent New York Unicycle Club meeting to shoot some video and conduct a few interviews of club members.  The result is this nice two and a half minute video from Troy’s Youtube.com Reelscaper page. It is a brief visual description of what goes on at typical meeting of the New York Unicycle Club. The NYUC meets twice per month all year round.  The first Sunday and the third Saturday of any given month are our regular meetings. On those days expect to see unicyclist riding around in front of Grants’ Tomb.  Visit our Meetings page for more information and directions.

Tuesday, September 21st, 2010

In Unison is a  short documentary film detailing the sport of extreme unicycling. The film gives a historic depiction of the unicycle and highlights evolution of the sport of unicycling to show the many facets of the sport as it exists today.
Above the Fray

The film was produced by Joseph Neigh pictured above. Joseph is a filmmaker and unicyclist from Northern Virginia. He has produced this film as part of his senior thesis while attending George Mason University. The documentary film debuted at the NYC 2010 Unicycle Festival that took place on Governors Island in September.  Some of the clips within the film were filmed at NYUC meetings.

This (above) is the 38 second trailer for the film.  If you are ready for more, you can watch the entire 21 minute film on The Internet Movie Database website, IMDb.com,  Just follow this link for the full version of In Unison.

Mature Learners

Thursday, March 11th, 2010

Unicycling is considered by many to be a sport for the young.  Many if not most current riders, myself included, have learned to ride unicycle between the ages of seven and seventeen. Thankfully, this does not deter individuals that have grown past that age bracket from learning to ride unicycle. At just about every one of our club meetings you can witness adult men and women making strong efforts to learn to ride. No matter what your current age happens to be, if you are interested in learning to ride a unicycle check out the Learn page on this website for some great tips on how to get started.

This meeting’s photograph’s highlight two gentlemen that have learned to ride as mature adults. A significant portion of the time they have spent learning has been at NYUC meetings.  First there is Zach who has been riding unicycle for a little more than two years now.  Pictured here riding his Nimbus 20″ freestyle unicycle. Zach often is one of the last riders remaining at the end of the unicycle club meetings he attends.

Arms Wide Open

The second photo depicts one of our unicycle dads, Peter who is the father of NYUC member Xia. Xia is one of our quick learning young club members. Peter has been unicycle riding for less than one year. He recently took his 20″ Torker along with him on a business trip to the UK where he did some riding around across the pond.  He is pictured here riding his fat tire Nimbus Boomerang unicycle.

All Protected

These and many more photographs taken at NYUC meetings can be viewed on our Flickr site.  Check out this slide show of all the photographs taken at the March 2010 meetings.

Best Photos of 2009 Selected

Friday, January 15th, 2010

I have taken on the truly difficult task of selecting what I feel are some of the best photographs taken at New York Unicycle Club meetings and assembled then into a single album on the NYUC Flickr Site. It is such a difficult task, since I decided to limit the amount  of selections to less than 100 shots. Last year I limited the selection to 65. We had so many good shots this year, I thought that I was justified in raising the limit to allow a robust selection for everyone to look at.

The new big wheel

The above photograph that has been selected to be included, depicts an incredibly stylist, custom 36 inch ultimate wheel owned by Adam Cohen of Just one Wheel. Check out the full slide show of the Best of 2009.  While you are visiting the site, spend some time viewing some of the other photograph albums including the Best of 2008 that were selected just a few months ago.

As November Begins In 2009

Monday, November 2nd, 2009

As the thousands were running the NYC marathon. Members of the NYUC  were meeting on a overcast day at Grants Tomb. Riding and practicing amongst the fallen leaves.

Side By Side

In this meeting’s photographs I am featuring our founder, David Stone, on the day after his birthday. He came to the meeting bringing one of  his two Super Trick Cycles (STC) in addition to his vehicle load of unicycles,  a bicycle, and two children. David in this picture is demonstrating  how you can ride the STC with both wheels side by side.

Check out all of the photographs taken at this meeting in the November slideshow.

Meeting On The Jewish New Year

Sunday, September 20th, 2009

The third Saturday in the month of September club meeting took place while the Jewish community was celebrating Rosh Hashanah. The first day of the  Jewish New Year of 5,770 found quite a few unicycle  riders enjoying a warm sunny day at Grant’s Tomb.

Recognizing the Holiday

It  was only coincidental that  we happened to have at the meeting this ultimate wheel with a Jewish star as part of the construction design.

A lot more photographs (59) were taken to memorialize this meeting you can view them all as well as all of the photographs taken in the past on our Flickr site.

If you have a little time on your hands, then by all means put on a little music and check out all of the photographs that were taken at both September meetings together in this slide show.

Meeting at the end of the summer is fun. Especially when you have great weather. For the next to last meeting of the summer we feature Andy Peterson. Andy is an accomplished unicycle rider as well as an incredible juggler. He can often be seen in the meeting photos performing difficult skills from both disciplines.

Andy on a walk

Check out this video clip of Andy on our Flickr site.

Another of  Andy’s skills is performing on the Slack Rope. Look for photos of  the slack rope in this months meeting photographs.

View the slide show of the the September 2009 photos also available on Flickr.
