Four days of 2016 NYC Festivities

Monday, September 5th, 2016

[caption id="attachment_1900" align="aligncenter" width="440" caption="Day One, Battery Park to Central Park (Click Photo to view Album)"][/caption]

The 2016 New York Unicycle Festival began on Thursday September 1st. While this has been the seventh year of the festival, this is the only second year of there being four days instead of three days of unicycle activities. Day one started with a light drizzle that ceased just as the ride began, 17 unicyclist began the ride from Battery Park up the west side cycling path on there way to Central Park. After a few rest stops we showed up at the entrance of the park at West 85th street being joined by yet one more unicyclist.  We made our way through the park down to 59th street, Columbus Circle for a lunch break. Just as we started to make our way down Broadway toward Time Square it again began to rain. Upon reaching Time Square it really started to come down. So, we sought shelter in a covered walkway on West 45th street until the rain let up. After about twenty-five minutes the rained lightened up so we set out back towards bike path by the Intrepid Aircraft carrier. We rode the entire way back with two rest stops, just upon reaching Battery Park the rain stopped. We all agreed that the 16.5 mile ride was incredibly fun despite the warm light rain falling on us for the entire ride back to the starting point. The photo above was recorded at one of the rest stops along the west side bike path that is part of Hudson River Park.

On day two of the festival was the annual celebration of Brooklyn Unicycle Day. In total there were 57 unicyclist that participated in crossing the Brooklyn Bridge in celebration of the  event. This year, close to 50 unicyclist decided to continue the 13 mile the ride to Coney Island. The riders paused at three rest stops along the route. The photo above was recorded in front of the Grand Army Plaza arch. Riders were they were greeted by even more unicyclists and jugglers at Nathan's Famous.  Later that evening, the group gathered at Dino's Wonder Wheel for a group photo. Immediately following, most have took advantage of a free ride on the Wonder Wheel.

I cannot begin to do justice in describing all the tremendous amount of unicycle activity that occurred on Govenors Island during day three. There must have been 150 or more unicyclist present. All enjoying the activities and wheeled vehicles.  Sem and Teresa Abrams and family brought with them all types of bikes and unicycles.  Adam and Renie Cohen of Just One Wheel were there helping people learn to unicycle in addition to all of the volunteers helping out in the overflowing learning area. All of this going on with music pumping in the background courtesy of DJ Sky.Unicyclist participated in playing hockey, basketball, unicycle sumo wrestling and other activities. There was a very entertaining unicycle show with many participants.

[caption id="attachment_1904" align="aligncenter" width="440" caption="Day Four, Govenors Island (Click on photo to view album)"][/caption]

The final day of the festival was basically a mirror of day three with about half as many unicyclists.  The activities were similar with a few variations such as the costume contest and unicycle kite flying. The four participants of the costume contest are depicted above.

This year the festival was a quite a success with every attendee truly enjoying every day of the festival.  If you have not attended one of the seven unicycle festivals to date, you are missing a real treat as a unicyclist. Especially if you live outside of the New York area. I would be a really good idea to put it on your schedule to attend next year.

This year I myself put more emphasis on taking more photographs then in past festivals. The result is over 1,000 photos contained in the four photo albums linked above.

Quite a few unicyclists have completed the ride on a 20 inch sized wheel.  One rider has even completed the ride on a 20 inch giraffe unicycle. For those that do not want to ride unicycle all the way to Coney Island can take the subway and meet us there. Days Three and Four: Governors Island. Moving  forward to main festivities on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday, September 5th, 2015

For Brooklyn Unicycle day 2015 was officially celebrated by Sixty-two New York Unicycle Festival participants crossing the Brooklyn Bridge. the unicyclist depicted above all agreed that that that was not enough of a celebration. So, they continued on to ride 12. 5 additional miles across the borough to Coney Island. Once they made it to Coney Island and was met  by jugglers and unicyclist that did not participate for the full ride, we all partook in a needed refueling at Nathan's Famous, With appetites satiated, it was time for a group photo to be taken in front of Dino's Wonder Wheel. As in years past this was followed by a variety show performed at the Coney Island Shooting Gallery. After the show everyone with enough energy to stick around was treated to a free ride on Dino's Wonder Wheel. They was also able to witness the final Coney Island fireworks show of the 2015 summer season. It was truly a day full of unicycle celebration. 2014 NYC Unicycle Festival Results

Tuesday, September 16th, 2014

The 2014 New York City Unicycle Festival organized by the Bindlestff Family Cirkus, began on August 29th with the celebration of Brooklyn Unicycle Day. This has been the fifth annual three day unicycle festival that has taken place in New York City. At just before 3:00pm, 66 unicycle riders gathered at the City Hall park just across from the entrance to the Brooklyn Bridge walk way awaiting the signal to head over the bridge into Brooklyn. After making it to the Brooklyn side of the bridge, 46 unicycle riders decided to continue on riding through Brooklyn with Coney Island being the final destination. The tour across the  bridge and through Brooklyn was organized by Unicycle Bridge Tour. It was an incredible day weather wise with warm temperatures with low humidity and a gentle breeze.

Upon reaching Coney Island riders were greeted and joined by a host of additional participants ready to continue with the day's festivities at Coney Island. We gathered at Nathan's Famous on Surf Avenue to fuel up for the evening. Some took advantage of the free ride on the Wonder Wheel after posing for the group photo below.

[caption id="attachment_1824" align="aligncenter" width="434" caption="Photo courtesy of Norman Blake"][/caption]

A little later that evening an incredible array of talented performers put on a show for large crowed that gathered at the Shooting Gallery Art Annex. The performers, performed nine separate acts in front of a packed house. Everyone was wowed and entertained by the dancing, riding, acrobatics, balancing, juggling and magic acts that the group performed. The show was hosted by Kyle Petersen also  known as "The Brooklyn Juggler".

Days two and three of the festival took place on Governors Island. Day two being the main day of the festival, was chock full of activities with DJ Sky King mixing on the ones and twos providing music in the background  for both days.

Available activities included: unicycle basketball, unicycle hockey, a trials course, unicycle sumo, unicycle skills performances and a whole lot more.

Staff from Just One Wheel were on hand to help teach both kids and adults how learn to ride in addition to the well attended learning center. Unicycle.com brought their trailer full of unicycles, unicycle part and accessories for purchase.

After the performances, a raffle was held where lucky ticket holders won unicycle parts and unicycle accessories. The grand prize was a brand new trials unicycle courtesy of Unicycle.com.

A great time was had by all who attended. Many expressed their appreciation for the festival and all of the activities that took place. The photos above are just a small sample of the photos taken over the three days of the festival. I hope that you take the time to view all of the photos on our Flickr site. The photo may provide a better sense of the activities that took place. I would have liked to have taken many more photos however, there was just so much to do at the festival. In any event, while you are there on the site,  you can see and enjoy all of our photo albums. Additional photos are posted each month.

This year's festival, as has the previous festivals are provided at a great cost. As such the Bindlestiff Family Cirkus is continuously looking for additional funding and sponsors. If you, someone you know or, some local company r vendor would like to participate or contribute to next year's festival, do not hesitate contacting them via their website. Any assistance to having this event continue annually will certainly be appreciated.
