Meeting After the Snow Storm

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

Just a couple of weeks after the big snow storm in February, a unicycle meeting took place at Grant’s Tomb. After clearing some snow so that we can spread out, a good time was had by all.

For this meeting we feature the ramp that had originally made it’s debut at the first meeting of the decade. This ramp built by Spencer’s dad turned out to be a popular attraction for the meeting.  This meet had many more participants then that cold windy Sunday in January when the ramp made it’s first appearance. Jason Katz is depicted here riding up and down the ramp with the seat out back. Check out all of the February 2010 meeting photographs in this slideshow on our Flickr site.

Second Meeting of the Decade

Monday, January 18th, 2010

On a day with temperatures in the 40′s NYUC held a meeting with quite a number of members.

Walking backwards

For this meeting’s photograph highlight I am featuring Tysen who devoted a considerable amount of time during this meeting attempting to learn to walk the wheel going backwards. We had good showing of members on winter’s Saturday. Check out all of the photographs taken so far this year on our Flickr site by viewing this Slide Show.  For this decade, this only the beginning. We have a lot more unicycling to do. So, come on out and join us.

Best Photos of 2009 Selected

Friday, January 15th, 2010

I have taken on the truly difficult task of selecting what I feel are some of the best photographs taken at New York Unicycle Club meetings and assembled then into a single album on the NYUC Flickr Site. It is such a difficult task, since I decided to limit the amount  of selections to less than 100 shots. Last year I limited the selection to 65. We had so many good shots this year, I thought that I was justified in raising the limit to allow a robust selection for everyone to look at.

The new big wheel

The above photograph that has been selected to be included, depicts an incredibly stylist, custom 36 inch ultimate wheel owned by Adam Cohen of Just one Wheel. Check out the full slide show of the Best of 2009.  While you are visiting the site, spend some time viewing some of the other photograph albums including the Best of 2008 that were selected just a few months ago.

Bitter Cold First Meeting

Sunday, January 3rd, 2010

We attempted to have a club meeting for the first Sunday in January.  Besides myself we had one brave soul endure the elements to make an appearance. Spencer and his dad arrived with a home built ramp in tow. Spencer is shown below sporting his brand new Kris Holm unicycle that he got for Christmas.

Spence2With the quadrangle still filled with snow and ice from the recent snow fall Spencer and Ken braved the cold 19° temperature with wind chill in the single digits to spend a few minutes riding around for the first meeting of the new year.

Father - son - ramp

Spencer’s dad, Daniel built a new ramp to ride on. I thought that it was more like a see-saw. some of you may recall that they brought a more fragile ramp the last time they came to a meeting that did not fare well. It was broken by the end of the meeting. This time they used thicker more durable lumber.

After riding around for a few minutes, father and son packed it in and made there way back home. I rode around for a few minutes more then waited in the car for awhile to see if any one else would show. I felt compelled to come out since the  heavy snow kept me from showing up for the last meeting in December.

As November Begins In 2009

Monday, November 2nd, 2009

As the thousands were running the NYC marathon. Members of the NYUC  were meeting on a overcast day at Grants Tomb. Riding and practicing amongst the fallen leaves.

Side By Side

In this meeting’s photographs I am featuring our founder, David Stone, on the day after his birthday. He came to the meeting bringing one of  his two Super Trick Cycles (STC) in addition to his vehicle load of unicycles,  a bicycle, and two children. David in this picture is demonstrating  how you can ride the STC with both wheels side by side.

Check out all of the photographs taken at this meeting in the November slideshow.

Just Families Today

Saturday, October 17th, 2009

For Saturday’s meeting in October, with the threat of rain it just  so happened that we had a small turn out of four unicycle families consisting of parents bringing their young ones out to ride on a cool overcast day.

Not Just One Wheel

The photograph above depicts Adam Cohen of JustOneWheel.com and his family who came to the meeting to do some riding. Adam brought along his  regular Coker and his ultimate Coker pictured here.  You can take a look at all of the photographs from both October meetings on the NYUC’s  Flickr site in this Slide-show.

I recently went though all of the photos for 2008 and pulled out what I felt to be some of the best shots. So if you have some time also check out the Best of 2008 Slide-show of photographs. Don’t even ask why I took so long to think of this. In January you can look forward to my Best of 2009 photo picks.  Maybe we can vote on the photograph of the year.

Vistors and Passers by

Sunday, October 4th, 2009

For the first Sunday of the month meeting of October 2009. NYUC is in recognition that unicycling is becoming a wide spread sport on our planet.

We had quite a few new members joining us for the first time this meeting.  The above photographs features two unicyclist that happened upon our meeting and decided to show their stuff as well as a woman visiting the Big Apple  from the Bean Town. She brought her unicycle from Boston to New York to ride with us.

It repeatedly happens from time to time that a passer by happens to be a unicyclist that is either from NYC or visiting. In the past it has always been just one . This meeting we had three guys visiting the area of Grant’s Tomb that knew how to ride. One (not pictured) had not ridden in twenty years.

You can check out all of the photographs taken in October in this Flickr slideshow.  Enjoy these and all of the photos on our Flickr site.

Hope to see you at the next meeting.

Meeting On The Jewish New Year

Sunday, September 20th, 2009

The third Saturday in the month of September club meeting took place while the Jewish community was celebrating Rosh Hashanah. The first day of the  Jewish New Year of 5,770 found quite a few unicycle  riders enjoying a warm sunny day at Grant’s Tomb.

Recognizing the Holiday

It  was only coincidental that  we happened to have at the meeting this ultimate wheel with a Jewish star as part of the construction design.

A lot more photographs (59) were taken to memorialize this meeting you can view them all as well as all of the photographs taken in the past on our Flickr site.

If you have a little time on your hands, then by all means put on a little music and check out all of the photographs that were taken at both September meetings together in this slide show.

End of Summer 2009

Monday, September 7th, 2009

Meeting at the end of the summer is fun. Especially when you have great weather. For the next to last meeting of the summer we feature Andy Peterson. Andy is an accomplished unicycle rider as well as an incredible juggler. He can often be seen in the meeting photos performing difficult skills from both disciplines.

Andy on a walk

Check out this video clip of Andy on our Flickr site.

Another of  Andy’s skills is performing on the Slack Rope. Look for photos of  the slack rope in this months meeting photographs.

View the slide show of the the September 2009 photos also available on Flickr.
