Third Annual Visit to Just One Wheel

Friday, February 21st, 2014

For what has now become an annual tradition, Members of the New York Unicycle Club took the trek out to Melville, Long Island to visit with Just One Wheel for the third consecutive President's Day.

Located on the campus of the Driftwood Day Camp, the Just One Wheel balance program is a fun place to hang out and ride both indoors and outdoors. The heavy blanket of snow covering the 12 acre site kept us for enjoying the outdoor areas of the camp on this visit. However, that did not stop us from having an incredible afternoon of riding inside their 10,000 square foot facility. Click on the above photo or the this slide show link to see the photos taken during our visit on the NYUC Flickr site.

Adam Cohen of Just One Wheel is looking forward to inviting NYUC members to return to the camp in the late Summer so that we may enjoy riding around throughout camp without being hindered by lingering snow. Pay attention to our calendar or join our email group by submitting your email address via the Contact page.

NYUC Rolls Through Parade

African American Day Parade 03

For the third year in a row, members of the New York Unicycle club participated in the African American Day Parade. For 2013 eight unicyclist brought out a variety of unicycles and rolled with the  Local 79 Laborers union parade float from 113th street to 136th street along Adam Clayton Powell Boulevard.  There was a wave of union members marching to the music being played by the on float disc jockey. We had a great time riding a performing for the crowd.  We hope to have even more members participate in the future. It is really a lot of fun. Click on the photo to check out the few photos taken throughout the day on our Flickr page.

2013 BK Uni Day 20

The 2013 New York City Unicycle Festival was as fantastic a festival as years past. We had 69 unicyclist cross over the Brooklyn Bridge in celebration of Brooklyn Unicycle Day. Once across the group you see pictured above continued riding to the first stop at Grand Army Plazza. The ride did not end there.  We continued to ride through Prospect Park and onto Coney Island. Check all the photos that I took throughout the day and evening in the Brooklyn Unicycle day Album.

2013 BK Uni Day 38

At Coney Island we were joined by even more unicyclists, friends, family and jugglers who enjoyed a ride on the Wonder Wheel, a unicycle  and juggling entertainment show and topped off by the Friday night fireworks show. But the fun did not end there we still had two more days of unicycle fun on Governors Island.

2013 Unifest Sat 53

Saturday on Governors Island we had a host of unicycle activities that was just so much fun. We had a tremendous turn out.  We had a unicycle show and the Hell on Wheel trials course.  As always the learning center was busy throughout. Check out the photos that I took in the Saturday Unicycle Festival Album.

2013 Unifest Sat 06 brought out their mobile unicycle trailer store. All types and levels of unicycles and unicycle parts were available for purchase.

2013 Unifest Sun 36

On Sunday we capped it off with even more activities including unicycle sumo wrestling, unicycle football demo and an unicycle pinata. Overall a good time was had by all and it would be hard to compare which of the four unicycle festivals were the best. I was so busy doing and seeing and conversing I did not get around to taking any where near the amount of photos for those of you that could not make it.  However, take the time to also check out the photos I did take in the Sunday Unicycle Festival Album.  I hope this gives you a taste of what goes at the three day Unicycle festival and I hope that many more of you can make out next year.

NYUC Rolls On Just One Wheel

Wednesday, February 22nd, 2012

J1W February Visit 18

A bunch of  New York Unicycle Club members spent their Presidents day holiday visiting the Just One Wheel's balance facility. The recently opened facility run by Adam and Renie Cohen, is designed not just for unicycling but, is devoted to the sport of balance. We were all delighted to ride around and try the different balance devices available. I was pleasantly surprised to see Ziggy has lost his title as the youngest unicyclist in the northeast to his younger brother Ikey.   Ikey was riding around (video) room as a solid level one unicyclist. He can even free mount his little 16 inch unicycle. We were hoping for more club members to take advantage of the opportunity to ride indoors. Particularly some of members that are new to unicycling. But there is always next time. Be on the look out for another invitation coming in the fall to experience the fun of balance at their facility located in Plainview Long Island.  Check out my earlier article for more details and links regarding Just One Wheel. Click on the photo above for a slide show of the rest of the photos made available on our Flickr site.

2011 Parade Day 09

New York Unicycle Club  member, Calvin Wright (right) and his his unicycle were highlighted in an article entitled Harlem's Unicycle Man Keeps Peddling written by Paul Smith. The article appeared in this weeks copy of the Uptowner,  a  local Manhattan newspaper that focuses on the neighborhoods of northern portion of the borough o Manhattan, New York. This article gives a snap shot into Calvin's life as a unicyclist in New York.  The photo at the beginning of the article was taken at the African American Day Parade that took place in Harlem, on Sunday, September 11.  At the parade Calvin was joined by seven other unicyclists. Five of the unicyclist were  fellow members of the NYUC in addition to the two unicyclist from King Charles Troupe that were mentioned in the article.  The eight unicyclist had a good time entertaining the crowd riding behind one of the floats.  Check out some of the other photos that were taken on the day  of the parade in this slide show on our Flickr page.

The 2011 Unicycle Festival Report

Monday, September 19th, 2011

2011 Festival Day one 0111

The second annual three day New York City Unicycle Festival took place over the Labor Day weekend. This years festival organized and produced by by the Bindlestiff Family Cirkus turned out to be a well attended success. The festival began with a contingent of 57 unicyclist with unicycles of various sizes and colors, including one made up to look like a sea horse, making the trek over the Brooklyn Bridge. The day was officially proclaimed by Brooklyn's Borough President, Marty Markowitz as "Brooklyn Unicycle Day".

2011 Festival Day one 0121

About 40 or so riders continued on riding through Brooklyn briefly stopping at Grand Army Plaza and the south end of Prospect Park finally ending up in Coney Island where we met up with participants that decided to get there via other forms of transportation. We had two adventurous 11 year old riders that traveled the entire 13 mile distance from the Manhattan side of the bridge to Coney Island on their unicycles. These two young men actually out paced many of the more experienced unicyclist throughout the ride. Many of the out paced rides were riding on wheels larger than the 20" and 24" size wheels on their respective unicycles of the young riders.

[caption id="attachment_1551" align="aligncenter" width="346" caption="Photo courtesy of Norman Blake"][/caption] At Coney Island after hanging out at Nathan's Famous, riders were rewarded with a ride on Deno's Wonder Wheel followed by participation in a unicycle skills demonstration being accompanied by music on the boardwalk. The first day of the unicycle festival was capped off with an incredible fireworks display out over the water.

2011 Festival Day Two 49

Day two of the festival that took place on  Governors Island, was chock full of activities. With unicycle tutorials, unicycle hockey, unicycle races and, skill demonstrations there was constant activity throughout the festival area of the island the entire day. Many tried out the outstanding Hell on Wheel unicycle trials course. The demonstrations featured four year old unicycle rider Ziggy Cohen as well as Kyle Petersen (Brooklyn Juggler) and Davd Cox performing comedic juggling acts.

Through out the day there were more than 300 participants with more than 160 unicycles. There were vendors on hand including and Dubé Juggling Equipment and others. Adam and Renie Cohen of Just One Wheel were directing the tutorial efforts for those that wanted to learn or hone their skills on the unicycle. DJ Sky kept the crowd entertained with music selections throughout the day.

The highlight of the day was the unicycle basketball game between Puerto Rico All Star unicycle basketball team and the King Charles Troupe. It was a competitive, hard fought basketball game.  King Charles Troupe trailed early. However, as they adjusted to the international rules of unicycle basketball, they climbed back in the game only to be edged out in the end by the Puerto Rico All Stars by a single point 37-36.

The King Charles Troupe put on excellent performance of unicycle team based skills such as basketball handling and  jumping double dutch.

All available unicyclist lined up and mounted their unicycles in an effort to break a world record of unicyclist mounted and continuously linked. Unfortunately there were not enough participants present to break the world record of 251 unicyclist. Though, this effort was not wasted by the 155 participating unicyclist who set a new New York State record of linked unicyclist.

2011 Festival Day Three 32

For the third and final day of this year's festival unicycle activities moved up to Harlem, USA. This is the regular meeting venue of the New York Unicycle club. About 65 unicyclist gathered for a full afternoon of just hanging out trying different and unique unicycles, doing skill demonstrations, practicing skills and unicycle networking.

Throughout the three days I snapped a nice collection of photographs that can be found on the NYUC Flickr site. Photographs of days one and two can be viewed in this photo album slideshow titled: 2011 Uni Fest, Day 1&2. Photographs from the third and final day of the festival can be found in this photo album slideshow titled 2011 UniFest Sunday.

This years festival was such a blast. There is a lot of confidence that this event will continue to grow in the future. There were many who were unable make it to this year's event including many that had attended the first NYC unicycle festival.

BUY Anti Flu Face Mask ONLINE NO PRESCRIPTION, Some of the uni folks at Governors Island, photo courtesy of Bindlestiff Family Cirkus

The First Annual New York City Unicycle Festival has come and gone. I took some time to chat with organizer Keith Nelson about how it all played out.  Here's what he had to say...

NYUC: What were the high points of the First Annual New York City Unicycle Festival?

Keith Nelson: So many high points were experienced at the first NYC Unicycle Festival, Anti Flu Face Mask pharmacy.  One of my high points started at the beginning of the three day NYC Unicycle Festival: seeing and being a part of 48 unicyclists crossing the Brooklyn Bridge.  The overall diversity of the event was spectacular, BUY Anti Flu Face Mask ONLINE NO PRESCRIPTION.   Riders of every type, New York. Los Angeles, California, age, and wheel size took part.

Still celebrating the fact on our first year of producing the festival we put together one of the largest gatherings of one wheelers in North America

NYUC: How many people attended?

The main event on Governors Island had 305 registered riders and a good number of renegade riders also took part. We also estimate that nearly 2000 people spent a bit of time spectating the events.

48 unicyclists took part in the crossing of the Brooklyn Bridge. The majority of these riders went on to complete the 13 mile ride to Coney Island, Anti Flu Face Mask snort, alcohol iteraction. And another 10 trials riders were waiting for our arrival at Coney Island.

Sunday at Grant's Tomb had an estimated 100 people.

NYUC: What were the biggest challenges in pulling it off?

The biggest challenges of anything these days seems to be financial. BUY Anti Flu Face Mask ONLINE NO PRESCRIPTION, Over the past five months I had to cut many corners. Purchase Anti Flu Face Mask online, With very little financial support from sponsors, lots of major favors were asked.

A major challenge and goal was to make sure that nearly 50 unicycle riders would be able to safely cross Brooklyn on one wheel. Knowing that many of the riders would not be familiar with urban riding, extensive preparations were a part of designing the route and making sure we had the support necessary.

On a personal level, El Paso, Texas. Washington, D.C. Seattle, Washington, the challenge was making sure that I could spend 15 to 40 hours a week working on the festival, knowing that the only compensation for this time would be seeing hundreds of people having the time of their life. Buy Anti Flu Face Mask without a prescription, Luckily, other work has been slow all summer.

The biggest challenge was out of our control: weather.

My main goal was to find some time to actually ride. And I did.

NYUC: How did Governors Island work out as a venue, BUY Anti Flu Face Mask ONLINE NO PRESCRIPTION.  Why did you choose it?

Governors Island actually chose us. In January I was quoted in the New York Times stating that NYC needed more access to bridges and roadways for unicycles. Fort Worth, Texas. Denver, Colorado, The good folks at Governors Island contacted me saying that they got a lot of two wheelers, but had never had any one wheelers on the island. I responded that NY had never had a unicycle festival. BUY Anti Flu Face Mask ONLINE NO PRESCRIPTION,  And from there, a proposal was created and Governors Island offered us the island free of charge.  The staff and support of Governors Island made it an easy choice, buy Anti Flu Face Mask no prescription. The fact that it is car free and made for cycling also helped.

NYUC: There was a hurricane heading up the East Coast the week of the festival. Comprar en línea Anti Flu Face Mask, comprar Anti Flu Face Mask baratos, Were you concerned?

Because of the threat of Hurricane Earl, I was checking the weather forecast every four hours starting nearly a week before the festival. Thus, I would say that I was concerned, Anti Flu Face Mask price. The weather was the one thing that could have negatively effected over five months of planning, BUY Anti Flu Face Mask ONLINE NO PRESCRIPTION.  Hope we can find a back-up indoor space for future years.

NYUC: How long have you been a unicyclist?

I have had two unicycles hanging on my wall for over 15 years. I would pull them down a couple times a year, Anti Flu Face Mask for sale, get frustrated, and stop practicing. Nearly two years ago I decided it was time to get serious and show myself that I could learn a new skill as I approached 40. Succeeded at both unicycle and reaching 40.

Festival Director Keith Nelson rides to Coney Island

NYUC: What is your background?

My organizational and van packing skills go back to the fact that I am an Eagle Scout.

My four years spent at Hampshire College studying Anarchist Theory left me with a degree that could only lead to a life of Cirkus.

I am a variety entertainer: circus, buy Anti Flu Face Mask from canada, sideshow, vaudeville, Order Anti Flu Face Mask online c.o.d, wild west. BUY Anti Flu Face Mask ONLINE NO PRESCRIPTION, I am co-founder of Bindlestiff Family Cirkus (the producer of the NYC Unicycle Festival). My other skills include juggling, sword swallowing, fire eating, Anti Flu Face Mask 125mg, clowning, knife throwing, Order Anti Flu Face Mask no prescription, and many more.

NYUC: Have your other skills made it easier to learn the unicycle. How?

As a circus entertainer I understand what it takes to accomplish an "impossible" feat. Practicing is a part of my daily life, so spending 15 to 60 minutes a day trying to go 10 feet on one wheel made sense to me, Nashville-Davidson, Tennessee. Portland, Oregon.  And now riding 40-50 miles on one wheel makes sense.

NYUC: How was the Festival paid for?

The festival was primarily funded by Bindlestiff Family Variety Arts, Inc., Anti Flu Face Mask 50mg, a NY based non-profit organization that, like most Americans, is struggling to survive the global depression. Mastercard and Visa will be the main ones profitting from this year's fest, BUY Anti Flu Face Mask ONLINE NO PRESCRIPTION.  We also had a few corporate sponsors who gave small contributions, Anti Flu Face Mask 200mg. It is difficult to get any major support on a first year festival.  We had a few individual donors who helped cover some of the costs.

And in the grand tradition of circus, Anti Flu Face Mask 1000mg, 2000mg, merchandise sales ended up being the primary thing that brought in necessary funds.

NYUC: Who helped out with the festival?

The list of people and groups that helped make the festival happen is large.

One of my main co-conspirators is Rob Hickman. He is the other person behind the NYC Unicycle Bridge Tour. Rob helped organize the Brooklyn Unicycle Day ride and put together the Uni Movie Series that happened at Governors Island.

BUY Anti Flu Face Mask ONLINE NO PRESCRIPTION, The staff and volunteer crew of Bindlestiff were instrumental in making it happen. Over 15 years of making Cirkus happen was a good foundation to make one year of Uni Fest happen.

The Hell on Wheel Gang (based in Chatham, San Diego, California. Dallas, Texas. San Antonio, Texas, NY) has been helping fuel my one wheel obsession, and when it came to putting the festival together, Anti Flu Face Mask from canadian pharmacy, these are the folks I turned to to build the trials course, run games, and generally help out.

Since the first idea of creating the Unicycle Festival, The New York Unicycle Club has been a great resource, Anti Flu Face Mask over the counter. Many of the volunteers for the festival came through the NY club. It was through the NY crew that we met our logo designer (Michael Samuel), Indianapolis, Indiana, San Francisco, California, the housing coordinator (Tina Rosser), and many of the folks on the planning committee. The NYUC was very instrumental in getting the word out to the one wheeled world. And they were an excellent host for Sunday's activities.

Bindlestiff's involvement in the NYC Juggling community also provided a number of the instrumental figures who made it all happen including DJ Sky King and volunteer coordinator Andrew Peterson.

It was a privilege to have Kip Anthony Jones and the entire crew of King Charles Troupe involved.

And special thanks to all the lone-wolf volunteers who helped make it happen.

NYUC: What can you say about growing the unicycle community?

The amount of coverage will undoubtedly help the unicycle community grow, BUY Anti Flu Face Mask ONLINE NO PRESCRIPTION. There were a number of folks who took part in the festival that did not know that there were other riders around, japan, craiglist, ebay, hcl. Providing opportunities for people to try to ride will help it grow. I just wish we could have had a vendor or two at the festival so people could get excited about learning to ride and then be able to leave with the main tool necessary, Where can i buy Anti Flu Face Mask online, a unicycle.

NYUC: What do you have planned for next year's Festival?

We are already planning the 2011 festival. I anticipate 100 riders will take part on the Bridge/long distance ride. I would not be surprised if the main day brings over 500 riders to Governors Island.

I hope we can find the sponsorship necessary to bring a few international one wheel acts to the festival.

And we aim to offer a public show highlighting the talent.

BUY Anti Flu Face Mask ONLINE NO PRESCRIPTION, Rolling to the Brooklyn Bridge.  On the right... it's Can Man!

NYUC: How would you explain the Festival to newcomers?

The NYC Unicycle Festival seeks to spread the one-wheel experience across North America and the globe, buy Anti Flu Face Mask online cod. Whether you are looking for a road to good health, a single wheeling life-style riding along the boardwalk at sunset, Anti Flu Face Mask withdrawal, or  an adrenaline junky's adventure, there is a wheel for you.  With the continuing growth of the festival and the greater unicycle community, we are anticipating a massive rise in unicycle popularity across the Big Apple and look forward to a day in which we have a one wheel lane on all bridges, kjøpe Anti Flu Face Mask online, bestill Anti Flu Face Mask online, uni racks at schools and the grocery store, and a "No Unicycling" sign on the steps of City Hall.
