When did you join the club?

March, 2001

 When did you start riding?

At about 1970-71.  I have been riding for more that 30 years.

 What got you started?

A long fence and determination.  Like many other riders at an early age I saw the King Charles troop ride in the Barnum and Baily Circus and thought that riding a unicycle was really cool and wanted to try it.  One of the kids in the neighborhood got a unicycle and I just had to have one. I got one for Christmas one year and I was riding it by that next summer.

Why do you love to unicycle?

At first as a teenager because it was different and convenient.  A unicycle is more portable and maneuverable than a bicycle.  Especially in shopping areas.  Growing up I did not have to worry as much about getting a uni stolen.  I could have it with me when I was hanging out with friend or in the park.  When it was time to go home I always had a ride.  Even today store owners don't object to me rolling my uni into their establishments. Now I love it for the fun of riding the exercise and accomplishment of a good ride.  I really get a kick out of seeing and helping others learn to ride and acquire skills.  Even though I basically have not learned any new skills in many years.  The unicycle can be a frustrating thing to learn -- I guess that is why I like to offer encouragement to all would be unicyclists.

What types of unicycling do you do?

Mainly touring around town and running errands besides attending Unatics meetings.

What kinds of unicycles do you own?

I currently own a 20" freesyle, 24" and a 29" Semcycles.  All of them have Semcycle air seats.

 General Comments

I, like many other people that I have met that were long time riders, have gone through a period where I put the unicycle aside for some reason or another.  In my case it was for about 10-12 years.  If I had the resources that are available to unicyclist today when I was a teenager I would certainly be a more skilfull rider.  Today I could most likly pass at being a level 4.  With the time available for riding as child along with the resouces that are availible now, I would most likely be a level 7 or 8.
