When did you join the club?

1/20/01

 When did you start riding?

March, 1980

 What got you started?

Love of balance, extra Bar Mitzvah gelt.  I was inspired, in part, by Tom Pennell, the guy seen riding in the streets of Brooklyn during the closing credits of "Welcome Back Kotter."

Why do you love to unicycle?

It is fast, portable, and easy to stop and start, so it's perfect for many conditions.  I love riding long stretches of clear bike paths, but I also love riding thru busy sidewalks -- it's such a cool challenge, like playing a human version of chess.

What types of unicycling do you do?

I mainly ride to work and to get around town.  For this type of riding, I use my 20" freestyle.  I also work a lot on skills, so if I have a few moments, I can always hop on my freestyle and practice.  For long distance riding, like when I ride to work from my house, I use my Coker with the 110mm cranks.  It's fast and a good workout.

What kinds of unicycles do you own?

I have many conventional unis in different sizes, ranging from my freestyle 20" to my 46"er called Godzilla.  I also have a 20" trials uni and a 6' Schwinn giraffe.  Then there are the 'odd' cycles.  I have a BC wheel (aka the impossible wheel), a double uni (two 24" wheels stacked, where I have to pedal backwards to go forwards), a 'spin cycle' where the frame can spin around, a uni with training wheels, and a trick bike (which is a uni with a front wheel and frame attached).

 Other Interests

I am a tournament Scrabble player (ranked in the top 200 in North America) and enjoy other games and puzzles.  I collect old baseball cards and paper money, and I enjoy doing magic tricks.  My greatest love is my family; Shirra and I have Fiona (born in 1996), Emmett (1999) and Maeve (2004).

 General Comments

Starting this club with Joe was one of the greatest things I ever did.  It has brought me close to a whole bunch of great people I never would have met otherwise, and it has made me a better unicyclist, too.

If you are REALLY into unicycling, you must attend a unicycle convention.  There are races, shows, talent competitions, uni sports like hockey and basketball, and fantastic muni and trials setups. The people are great, too.
